'Imaginative Colours' Tool / / Fedrigoni

From todays crit it is clear that me and Kirsty need a clearer understanding of Fedrigoni's 'Imaginative Colours' tool.  Our proposed idea of a collaborative event lacked promoting the stock that this whole brief is based around.  A concept is important, however, we need to include the functionality of the product within the event somehow.

This was obvious once said.  It just needed to be said.  We got carried away with the concept of thinking big, and forgot about the fundamental aim of selling the product.

COLOUR / / Texture

Artist Perry Burge places ink and paint in water, and while the liquids are moving the photos are taken. “I use natural processes to produce images which reflect natural phenomena. When working with ink in water, heat, evaporation, chemical reaction, turbulence etc. are used to build up my images. The resulting pictures therefore reflect natural processes which we see around us.”

I could look at these all day long.

INK / / Texture

Looking further into alternative ways of utilising ink.
Using it creatively to inspire.
Probably a good idea to start looking into the science behind ink- pushing the limits of the relationship between ink and paper to create something actually a little interesting.  Maybe.

'Music worked with screen printers ASForPrint and marbling artist Jemma Lewis to create a series of beautiful prints to promote the inaugural Leeds Print Festival.'

And then I found this:

My first reaction when we chose the brief was to go to the library and look for anything to do with colour that had nothing to do with graphic design.

I then realised that I needed more research than fine art books on contemporary art practices involving colour.  I looked into the design aspect more thoroughly.  An important part of the process is to be able to work with colour.  You need to know all you can before you begin working with 'imaginative colours'.  'Learn all the rules so that they can be broken'.

GFSmith / / Competition analysis

GFSmith are a clear competitor when it comes to paper supply.  It would seem that GFSmith are more successful in the design aspect of their work, in that their promotional pieces have been advertised on the front cover of EYE magazine.

SEA's work on the GF Smith Digital Print Test Promo is featured in and on the cover of the Summer 2011 edition of Eye Magazine.
Note the colour and texture.  One of the aspects Fedrigoni are asking to be incorporated into the design.

Perhaps Federigoni want something a little more design directed in this manner.  It is a question that, to be answered, needs further investigation

FEDRIGONI / / Visual direction

Some visuals to refer to and inspire when designing for the Fedrigoni brief.  Interesting shapes / / lines / / textures created here.  Sourced directly from the site.
